The best natural itineraries and hiking trails in San Marino
A short but steep trail on the southern side of the Castle of Fiorentino. The sight? Ridges and uncontaminated nature. You will spot the old medieval fortress, of historical and archaeological value, right at your arrival on site.
The castle of Fiorentino was one of the “Castra Subdita”, that is one of the old fortresses belonging to the Malatestas that became part of San Marino’s jurisdiction after Sigismondo Malatesta conquered it in 1463.
The original structure was razed to the ground by the citizens of San Marino themselves, to avoid falling into the hands of the enemy.
Being the most dangerous outpost belonging to the conquerors (just 3 kilometres from San Marino) the fortress earned the name “Castellaccio” (the “bad castle”).
Today, if you take the 2 kilometre long trail climbing up to Mount Seghizzo, you can see the ruins of the castle. The climb is facilitated by steep wooden steps and with a short detour you can also get to the Genga Falls, a place of incredible beauty.
